All this stems from a strong commitment to research and development (R&D), based on an "open innovation" model. In 2022, Pirelli's investments in R&D exceeded 5% of revenue from high-value products, one of the highest levels among the world's leading tire manufacturers. Pirelli employs about 2000 people in R&D, at the Milan headquarters and 12 overseas technology centers, and holds over 5900 patents across 690 active patent families. In 2022, Pirelli opened a new "Digital Solutions Centre" in Bari to develop software and algorithms to support machine learning and artificial intelligence for business processes and the creation of new digital products and services for the tire industry. Pirelli also has several collaborative R&D projects and joint development agreements with external entities such as suppliers, universities, and car manufacturers. The company is involved in 65 collaboration projects with universities, over 20 joint development agreements, and partners with suppliers and numerous R&D projects with premium car manufacturers in the field of innovative technology. In 2023, the first "R&D Excellence Next" master's training program concluded, created in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano. It involved 34 newly hired young engineers, aiming to train specialized experts.
