Barum's History: How It All Began
For over 70 years, we've relied on long mileage, balanced driving features, and affordability. It all started in 1948 with the merger of three tire manufacturers. Today, Barum produces over 21 million tires annually, is part of Continental AG, and is one of Europe's leading tire companies.
Barum: From Rubber to Tire Manufacturing
The foundation of Barum's success story was laid by three founders: Bata, Rubana, and Mitas. These three rubber visionaries established a tire company in the Czech town of Zlín in 1948. One man in particular provided the necessary expertise: Jan Antonín Baťa. His name is closely associated with the Czech Republic and the successful production of shoes. The company was founded by his brother Tomáš Baťa in 1894, and Jan Antonín took over the business in 1932. After nationalization in 1945, Baťa finally dedicated himself to new challenges in the rubber industry. He recognized the material's great potential for the automotive sector and committed fully to his vision: instead of work, protective, and street shoes, the factory would now only produce tires. A suitable name for the new company was quickly found, combining the initials of the three founders into the brand name "Barum".
Barum Becomes a Subsidiary of Continental – Success by Merging
Another milestone in the company's history was the merger with the German tire manufacturer Continental in 1993. Barum's development accelerated rapidly upon becoming part of the Continental group. Since then, Barum has benefited from the German tire company's expertise and research capacity, as well as its highly efficient, state-of-the-art tire manufacturing technologies. The result: Barum's high-quality tires for cars, SUVs, and trucks win people over. Lloyd's Register Group has also recognized our high standards. In 1994, Barum was awarded the Lloyd's Register certificate for quality according to ISO 9001 for the car tire manufacturing process. Two years later, the certification was extended to cover the production process of agricultural and truck tires. In 1997, Barum became the first company in the Czech Republic to receive ISO 14001 and EMAS certificates for compliance with environmental regulations.
