What do the snow/mountain peak symbols on winter tires mean? Are your winter tires legal for winter use?

17.9.2025

Did you know that? Winter tires used in winter conditions in Finland must have at least a 3PMSF marking, i.e. a snowflake mountain peak marking (snow grip marking), as in the tire in the picture after the M+S (mud and snow) marking. In Nordic conditions, it would be a good idea to also have an iceberg peak marking (ice grip marking), so that the tire also works in severe frosts and icy roads, this marking is visible as a symbol on the right side of the tire. The M+S marking alone will no longer be sufficient for a winter tire in Finland as of December 1, 2024. This is an important consideration, especially for those drivers who have purchased their winter tires in 2024.

Central European vs. Nordic friction tires.
Central European friction tires are not designed for severe frosts, but mainly for wet asphalt and occasional snow conditions, and they must have a 3PMSF marking, i.e. a snowflake mountain peak marking. In Finland, you need Nordic traction tires in winter, which have at least this snowflake mountain peak symbol (3PMSF) and in addition, it would be advisable to have an iceberg peak symbol so that the tire also works in severe frosts and on snowy and icy roads.

3PMSF (snow grip marking) what does it mean?
The 3PMSF symbol, or snowflake mountain peak marking, must be found on the side of your winter tire to indicate that it is an approved winter tire in Europe. The symbol indicates that the tire will grip on snowy surfaces. In order to receive the 3PMSF marking, the winter grip properties of the tires must pass certified laboratory tests. The 3PMSF letter combination comes from the words 3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake and the symbol is a snowflake placed inside a three-peak mountain. A tire approved for demanding winter use has a snow grip marking, and a Nordic traction tire that has passed the international ice grip test also has an ice grip marking.

Iceberg marking (ice grip marking), what does it mean?
The Iceberg marking can be found on friction tires suitable for the Nordic countries. The ice grip marking means that the tires are designed to be used in icy conditions. This tire has therefore been tested on icy surfaces in accordance with the highest standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The ice grip marking guarantees that the tire is suitable for the harsh winters and icy roads of the North.
